Q: Looking for a replacement for WhatsUp

I am sure this has been covered before. We are looking for a replacement for WhatsUp. We don't utilize most of the features in WhatsUp. What we need is something that can ping a IP address and if it doesn't respond send out a email. I would like it to send a email at the 2, 5 and 20 minute mark. We also need it to send out another email once it has come back up.

I have looked at OpenNMS and it is great. The only thing that I have ran into is that I don't see how I can set it up to monitor a device for only ping. So if anyone knows how to set it up it would be great if you could point me in the right direction.

If you have any solutions I am open to hearing it. It could be a linux or Windows based solution. However if it is a LInux based solution it would need to have a GUI.

    Our Requirements...

    1.Monitor Ping

2.Send email alert at three different time intervals.

3.Send out email once the IP is responding to ping.

    Q: Public IP address blacklisted

IP Address * * * * is listed in the CBL. It appears to be infected with a spam sending trojan, proxy or some other form of botnet. It was last detected at 2014-10-14 00:00 GMT (+/- 30 minutes), approximately 5 hours ago. This IP is infected (or NATting for a computer that is infected) with the Conficker botnet.

How can i be able to identify this machine on the network. i have installed and scanned with anti virus but stillhas the same problem

Typically, if a machine is sending out SPAM messages, it would generate higher than usual egress/out-going traffic... Use a network monitoring software such as Wireshark or Capsa, and identify end-points with unusual out-going traffic. Alternately, if you have a firewall with monitoring and reporting enabled, you could do the same from there...

    Q: home network issues.
I was curious about home network monitoring First off I was wondering if there was a way to monitor if there are any users accessing my home network without me knowing. I have wireshark but don't necessarily know how to use it. And secondly a way to block said users.

If you got spare resources (old computer ect) you can setup Pfsense, it is an open source firewall,
with that you will be able to tell exactly what is going where in your network.

Regular home routers have usually really limited ability to check on that stuff.

Tools, if you have an iPhone, I really like Net Master or WUMW, I got them both for free, so not sure if it is worth the price... they basically scan your network and list all connected devices.

NagiOS or Capsa Free can tell you what traffic is going on in your network as well and whci devices are using what.

    Q: Finding Bandwidth Hogs
    Hello,

I currently have a 10mb pipe running from my location to a remote site. There's a Cisco 3560 on each end. I currently have a laptop connected to the receive port (setup a monitor port) on the 3560 in the remote site and I'm using Wireshark to track the endpoints. Not sure if I'm getting the data that I need.

Question is ... Is there a way that I can monitor the traffic over that pipe (Port 24 on both 3560's) and see what devices/IP's are pulling the most bandwidth in the remote site.

    Thanks for any help

    Q: Blocking Torrents

    Hello Everyone,

I need to find out who keeps downloading torrents on my network, and block any further downloads.

What is a good tool that can help me do this, or what measures should I take.

    Thank you for your time.

packet sniffer. also if you have a switch that can mirror the network traffic to 1 port.

capsa is a decent one to try out.

    Hello,

what is the best free bandwidth monitoring tool for a network (not just the local PC)?

does it say who's connecting and tracking every device's traffic?

^ See in the other post.

    If not...

    - Capsa Free is nice
    - NagiOS is great
    - Wireshark (though more of a packet analyzer but should help as well)
    - MS Network Monitor
    - PRTG Network Monitor

And usually on most FireWalls / Edge devices you have some sort of tracking as well.

    Q:Network monitoring software

    stables2511 Dec 11, 2014 at 11:58 PM | NETWORKING
One of our 3rd party developers are saying that one of our networks has gone a bottleneck somewhere on the network which is causing them problems distributing their new software across to all machines.

Does anyone know a simple piece of software that i can use to scan for problems? I don't think there is an issue but i have to check.

BTW no managed switches onsite so can't go down that road.
